Introduction to Civil Engineering : Relevance of Civil Engineering in the overall infrastructural development of the country, Brief introduction to major disciplines of Civil Engineering Conventional construction materials : Types, properties and uses of building materials: bricks, stones, cement, sand, timber and steel. Cement concrete: Plain Cement Concrete (PCC) and Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC), Constituent materials and properties (brief discussion only). Other construction materials: Glass, Ceramics, Plastics, Composite materials, Thermal and acoustic insulating materials, Decorative panels, water proofing materials, Gypsum. Surveying: Basic Principles of surveying, instruments, methods and measurements. Environment :Water Supply and Sanitary Systems, Urban Air Pollution Management, Solid Waste Management, Urban Flood Control (brief discussion only).
